Tent pegs are easy to overlook until they fail — and on a windy night or soft ground, the wrong pegs can compromise an otherwise solid pitch. The right choice depends on the ground conditions you're camping on, the size and weight of your tent, and how much you're willing to carry.

Ground Type Shapes Everything

The single biggest factor when choosing camping pegs is the ground you'll be pitching on. Soft or sandy ground calls for pegs with a wider surface area — V-shaped or Y-profile designs hold better in loose soil than narrow round-wire pegs, which can pull through easily. For firm, compacted or stony ground, heavier duty options with greater strength are worth considering. Rock pegs and solid steel designs are built to be driven into harder surfaces without bending, though they come at the cost of extra weight.

Most tents are supplied with basic pegs that perform reasonably in average conditions. Upgrading to purpose-made pegs for the terrain you regularly camp on is one of the more practical improvements a camper can make.

Material and Construction Trade-offs

Tent pegs are most commonly made from one of three materials, each with different strengths:

  • Steel — durable and resistant to bending, suits firm ground well, but adds weight
  • Aluminium — lighter than steel, a sensible option for backpackers and those counting pack weight, though generally less suited to very hard or rocky ground
  • Plastic or composite — often found in budget or included sets, fine for casual use on soft ground but less reliable in challenging conditions

Heavy duty tent pegs typically use thicker steel or reinforced aluminium profiles. For most UK camping conditions — soft grass, mixed soil — mid-weight aluminium pegs offer a practical balance. If you're heading onto harder terrain or using a larger, heavier tent, it's worth stepping up to a stronger option.

Quantity, Sizing and Practical Considerations

When comparing options at Camping Depot, it's worth checking how many pegs you actually need. Larger family tents with multiple guylines can require significantly more pegs than the minimum supplied. Having spares is sensible — pegs bend, get left behind or are harder to retrieve from firm ground.

Length matters too. Shorter pegs may be adequate on soft ground with a light shelter, while longer pegs provide better grip when pitching in softer or more exposed conditions. A rubber mallet or peg hammer is a worthwhile companion for heavier steel designs, particularly on firm ground where hand pressure alone won't seat a peg fully.
