A good camping mat does more than add comfort — it insulates you from the ground, which loses body heat far more quickly than cold air. Choosing the right one comes down to how you camp, how far you carry your kit, and what conditions you're likely to face.

Inflation, Foam or Self-Inflating?

Most sleeping mats fall into three broad types, each with different trade-offs.

  • Foam roll mats are the simplest option — lightweight, durable and inexpensive, with no risk of puncture. They tend to be bulkier to carry and offer less cushioning than inflatable alternatives.
  • Self-inflating mats combine open-cell foam with an air valve. They partially inflate on their own and can be topped up by mouth. They pack smaller than foam mats and generally offer a good balance of comfort and insulation.
  • Inflatable sleeping mats compress down significantly and are popular with backpackers watching pack weight. Insulation varies between models, so it's worth checking the R-value or season rating if you're camping in cooler weather.

Insulation and Season Ratings

For three-season use, most standard mats perform adequately. Winter camping or exposed sites in the UK demand more — a mat rated for four seasons will have better insulation to cope with cold ground. Some inflatable mats include internal baffles or synthetic fill to improve warmth without adding much weight.

R-value is the measure of thermal resistance used across the industry. A higher R-value means better insulation. It's a more reliable comparison point than vague season labels, though not all manufacturers publish it consistently.

Size, Weight and Packability

For family camping or car-based trips, packability is less of a concern — a thicker, wider mat can be a practical choice. For backpacking or hiking, a lightweight sleeping mat becomes a priority alongside how small it compresses.

Width and length matter too. Standard mats suit most adults, but taller campers or those who move around in their sleep may find a wider or longer option more practical. Some folding sleeping mats are designed for use as a seat pad during the day, which can be useful on longer trips.

When comparing options at Camping Depot, it's worth thinking about how the mat will be carried as much as how it will feel underfoot — a mat that's too bulky for your pack is likely to get left behind.
