Leisure Battery

A reliable leisure battery is the backbone of any off-grid electrical setup, whether you're running lights in a tent awning, powering a cool box on a long trip, or keeping devices charged at a campsite without hook-up. At Camping Depot, you'll find options to suit a range of camping and caravanning needs, so you can keep the power flowing wherever you pitch up.

A leisure battery is a dedicated deep-cycle battery designed to power onboard equipment over extended periods — lighting, pumps, fridges, chargers — without the rapid discharge and recharge cycles a standard vehicle battery is built for. Choosing the right one comes down to chemistry, capacity, and how you actually use your setup.

Lead-Acid or Lithium?

The two main chemistries you'll encounter are AGM/gel lead-acid and lithium (LiFePO4). Each involves real trade-offs rather than one being straightforwardly better.

  • AGM and gel batteries are well established, broadly compatible with most existing charging systems, and generally lower in upfront cost.
  • Lithium leisure batteries are significantly lighter, tolerate deeper discharge without damage, and typically offer a longer service life — though they cost more initially and may require a compatible charger or solar controller.

For occasional weekend trips with modest power needs, a lead-acid unit may be perfectly adequate. For longer stays or heavier electrical loads, the weight saving and usable capacity of a lithium option often justifies the price difference.

Capacity and Practical Fit

Capacity is measured in amp-hours (Ah) and gives a broad indication of how much energy the battery stores. A higher Ah rating doesn't always mean better — it needs to match your actual consumption and the space available in your caravan, motorhome or campervan.

It's also worth considering:

  • Usable capacity — lead-acid batteries shouldn't typically be discharged below 50%, whereas lithium chemistry allows much deeper use of the rated capacity
  • Physical size and weight — particularly relevant if you have a fixed battery compartment or weight restrictions
  • Terminal type and orientation — these affect compatibility with existing wiring and connectors

Charging and System Compatibility

A caravan leisure battery may be charged via mains hook-up, a vehicle split-charge relay, or a solar panel setup. Not all chargers suit all battery types — using the wrong charger can reduce performance or shorten battery life. When comparing options at Camping Depot, it's worth checking whether the battery you're considering aligns with your existing charging setup, or whether you'll need to factor in a compatible charger alongside it.

For solar users, a charge controller matched to the battery chemistry is equally important and worth considering as part of the overall system rather than as a separate afterthought.
